BELLINGHAM — The National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security have designated Whatcom Community College as a national center of academic excellence in information assurance and cyber defense.

WCC is among the first community colleges in the nation to earn this distinction.

“The college is extremely proud of this national recognition and the attention it brings to our community as an educational leader in the growing field of cybersecurity,” WCC President Kathi Hiyane-Brown said in a prepared statement.

The NSA conducted a review of Whatcom’s curriculum and found that it met the NSA’s new standards.

“(Whatcom’s) ability to meet the increasing demands of the program criteria will serve the nation well in contributing to the protection of the National Information Infrastructure,” read an announcement from the NSA and Department of Homeland Security.

Corrinne Sande, the college’s technology department chair, will receive WCC’s certificate on behalf of the college during a ceremony Nov. 4, in Columbia, Md.
