WCC receives approval from NWCCU to offer first four-year degree

Bachelor of Applied Science degree will be in IT Networking

Students can enroll now to begin first- and second-year coursework

Whatcom Community College has received accreditation approval by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) to enroll accepted students in a new Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree in IT Networking beginning fall 2017. It is the College's first four-year degree. Students can enroll now and begin required coursework for the College's acclaimed two-year associate's degree in computer information systems (CIS), which is the foundation for the new bachelor's degree. While students are in the associate's degree program, they will be able to apply to finish the last two years of the baccalaureate program. An application deadline for the BAS program has not yet been set.

The College was approved by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges in May 2015 to offer the applied four-year degree program. The degree addresses the growing employment gap for qualified IT networking personnel with enhanced skills in cloud computing, mobile technologies and industrial control systems. WCC will work closely with area colleges to provide access to students with associate’s degrees in IT. The new four-year degree is the only one of its kind in the northwest corner of the state and confirms Whatcom’s stature as a regional and national leader in CIS and cybersecurity education.

The approval follows two recent grants Whatcom received from the National Science Foundation (NSF) totaling $6.4 million. The grants reinforced Whatcom’s nationwide leadership in cybersecurity and will allow the College to drive a substantial nationwide expansion of cybersecurity programs in other colleges and universities.
