Statement from WCC President Kathi Hiyane-Brown regarding passing of former state Senator Harriet Spanel
Bellingham, Wash. – On behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students of Whatcom Community College, President Kathi Hiyane-Brown released the following statement regarding the passing of former state Senator Harriet Spanel of the 40th legislative district.
“On behalf of the entire campus community, I extend our deep condolences to the family of former state Senator Harriet Spanel. During her more than 20 years in the legislature, she was a strong advocate of higher education. Her deep knowledge of the issues and her ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow legislators made her a valuable ally. During her early terms in office, Senator Spanel served on both the education and higher education committees, including as vice chair of the higher education committee in 1989. This was a time of dramatic growth for Whatcom Community College. We recall with appreciation her support of the College, our students and faculty and staff. She was truly a remarkable woman and will be greatly missed.”
