Art students participate in Postcard Project: What is Your Dream?
Art professor Caryn Friedlander’s Painting I and II winter quarter classes participated in the third annual Postcard Project: What is Your Dream? Each student created a handmade postcard to send to a Lummi Nation middle school student. The only guidelines for the first postcard were to include an image of a bird and the question “What is your dream?” After the Lummi students received their cards, they spent several classes working on their beautifully crafted artwork and questions in response to their WCC partners. Lummi students visited campus to see an exhibit of their postcards and to meet again with their WCC pen pals. Janice Hottman, Lummi middle school English teacher, says: “... I’ve seen shy, quiet students really blossom throughout this project. … It allows them to dream big and envision their lives beyond middle school.” WCC also partnered with Fisher Elementary on this Service-Learning initiative, which was created by Friedlander.
