FAFSA and WAFSA for 2017-18 academic year now available

Post Date:09/30/2016 11:31 a.m.

Two exciting changes are coming to the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) process this year!

First, the 2017-2018 FAFSA and WAFSA will be available earlier, beginning October 1, 2016, rather than January.  This earlier date is a permanent change, enabling you to complete a FAFSA or WAFSA much earlier each year.  This earlier availability will give you more time to meet deadlines and understand your financial aid options.

Secondly, beginning with the 2017-2018 FAFSA and WAFSA you will be reporting tax information for an earlier year.  The 2017-2018 FAFSA and WAFSA will use tax information from 2015 taxes which means: you will have already completed your 2015 taxes at the time the FAFSA and WASFA becomes available; you will more likely be able to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to automatically import your tax information into your FAFSA.

If you want to get a jump on completing your 2017-2018 FAFSA (to use for the Summer 2017-Spring 2018 quarters) go to  To complete a WAFSA to go

If you need help filling out your FAFSA or WAFSA come to the Heiner Center on Whatcom's campus October 15th.  Sessions start at 9:00 am to continue until 1:00 pm.  Experts will be on hand to help you fill it out.
