Whatcom Community College's opportunity grant coordinator and financial aid advisor Kelly Bashaw received the Volunteer of the Year award from FuturesNW at their Nov. 3 Champions Award event. FuturesNW executive director Sharon Camblin said, “Recipients exemplify the very best in those who champion the mission of FuturesNW to level the college playing field and empower low-income, often marginalized students, to achieve their career and college dreams. Kelly was one of the first people to staff FAFSA events, has never said no to a request to speak at an event, and is always on call for ways to help College Bound students. We are deeply indebted to her for her generosity of time and passion for partnering."

Bashaw, who has worked as a WCC advisor for 16 years, also serves on the Bellingham School District board.

About FuturesNW: FuturesNW actively recruits students who are low-income, first-generation students from underserved communities. Their staff and volunteers works with students from the 8th – 9th grade transition through their first semester as a college freshmen. The program helps families remove the barriers that prevent students from being successful by providing them with comprehensive academic support, leadership training, and financial and college advising to succeed in college and beyond.
