Campus improvement projects beginning this summer

Post Date:05/25/2017 9:14 am

As summer rapidly approaches, WCC's Facilities and Operations staff are preparing for several repair, remodels, and improvement projects on campus, which will begin in June. In addition to those projects, WCC’s next major capital project, the Phyllis & Charles Self Learning Commons (LRN) is scheduled to break ground this summer. Below is a summary of some of the work we hope to accomplish on campus over the next few months and some potential operational impacts. Also included is information on the Learning Commons, which will carry construction activities through summer 2019.

Please take a moment to review the project list and consider the potential operational impacts listed for each. As always, Facilities and Operations staff will do their very best to limit disruption to campus. Please pay particularly close attention to construction signage and messaging regarding safety in construction areas. We ask for your patience and understanding as we all work together to complete these exciting improvements to campus.

Phyllis & Charles Self Learning Commons (LRN) – The Learning Commons will be the first state-funded major construction project on our campus since Kulshan Hall was completed in 2005. The new 65,000 sq. ft. facility will integrate the full resources of the library with academic support services, including the learning, math and writing centers and tutoring services. It  will also provide access to instructional technology, collaborative workstations, and individual and group study spaces. The co-location of functions will provide for future flexibility, spark collaboration, and provide students with access to a variety of resources to support their unique learning needs. For more information on the Learning Commons visit

  • Construction Schedule: August 2017 - July 2019

Cascade Emergency Generator System – A new 150kW natural gas powered generator will be installed on the west side of Cascade Hall near the existing power transformer. In addition, a new uninterrupted power system (UPS) will be installed to provide constant power to the data server room. The new system will allow the college to maintain our data and phone servers through an extended power outage and greatly reduce ongoing issues created when the servers are forced to be shut down and restarted.

Operational Impacts:

  • Sections of walkways and parking spaces immediately adjacent to Cascade may be temporarily closed as work progresses. Alternative, accessible routes will be identified to maintain building access.
  • Noise related to demolition and construction activity may be noticeable inside the building.
  • There may be scheduled phone and data outages as the server room equipment is migrated to the new generator and back-up power system. Outages will be scheduled to limit disruption to campus and will be communicated in advance.

Kulshan Room 108 Lab Conversion – This project will convert Kulshan 108 to a hybrid lab to be utilized by both chemistry and biology classes. • Construction activities will likely carry into the fall quarter 2017.

Kellogg Road Crosswalk Safety Improvements – Additional lighting, signage, and signalization will be added to the Kellogg Rd. crosswalks between Laidlaw Center/Kulshan Hall and Pavilion/Cascade Hall.
