U.S. Bank awards two WCC cybersecurity students $2,500 scholarships

U.S. Bank cybersecurity scholarship recipients

Bellingham, Wash. – The recipients of this year’s $2,500 U.S. Bank Cybersecurity Scholarships from Whatcom Community College are Morgan Guthrie and Ian Ferrer. Both students were honored at an Oct. 12 U.S. Bank event in Seattle, at which Agnes Kirk, Washington State’s chief information security officer attended.

Morgan (pictured front row, far left) chose Whatcom’s cybersecurity program because she wanted to be financially independent, to do something that helps people, and to work in a field with high demand. “The kind of confidence I feel within myself when I am learning to master something I used to be scared of is second only to the satisfaction I get from helping someone else with a problem that used to baffle me,” said Morgan. Ian plans to complete his undergraduate education in cybersecurity before pursuing a career in intellectual property law. He is currently the executive vice president for the Associated Students of WCC. Morgan and Ian are active in WCC’s IT Professionals club and Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition team.

Students enrolled in Whatcom’s Computer Information Systems (CIS) and cybersecurity programs have the advantage of studying at one of the nation’s top community colleges (Aspen Institute, 2017), recognized by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance / Cyber Defense 2-year education. Whatcom is also the lead institution of CyberWatch West, a National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education center that is one of only four in the nation in the field of cybersecurity education.

“These designations help our students as they enter the workforce or transfer to four-year schools, conveying that they graduated from a program nationally recognized for its excellence and alignment to the highest information security standards for two-year college education,” said Whatcom’s Computer Sciences and Information Systems and CyberWatch West Director, Corrinne Sande. “We greatly appreciate U.S. Bank’s recognition of the need to support students and increase the number of graduates in this high-demand field.”

Whatcom’s CIS and cybersecurity programs offer multiple degree and certificate options, including the College’s new bachelor of applied science degree in IT networking, that lead to high-wage occupations and/or transfer opportunities. Learn more at whatcom.edu/cis
