Hans is a landscape artist, horticulturist, garden instructor and nature lover. He is deeply passionate about Japanese culture particularly the aesthetics of nature.
Hans currently teaches Japanese garden design principles for Western gardens.
Hans is a passionate teacher and deeply enjoys interacting with students and sharing his experience. He has developed great skill for pruning pine and maple trees and aesthetic rock setting.
Hans has been a lifelong gardener. His fascination with Japanese design aesthetics began as a Bonsai artist which set the stage to study Japanese gardening, eventually establishing his own landscaping business. He has interned with the head gardener at Nitobe Memorial Japanese Garden (University of British Columbia, Vancouver). and completed the Ornamental Horticulture program at Edmonds Community College. Additional training includes restoration and maintenance workshops at Kubota Japanese Garden (Seattle) and Washington Park Arboretum Japanese Garden (Seattle) as well as traveling to Kyoto, Japan to study the gardens there.
Hans and his wife Shelley are busy designing and building Japanese-inspired gardens. They enjoy Chado - the Way of Tea, reading, hiking, classical music, and walking their Viszla dogs in nature.
