Willner, Jennifer R.

Willner
  • Departments:Community & Continuing Education Instructor

Jennifer R. Willner is a principal in the law firm Halvorson & Willner, PLLC, which has offices in Bellevue and Bellingham, Washington.  The firm’s attorneys have over 75 years combined experience representing employers throughout the Northwest in the entire range of labor and employment law matters. Their clients are diverse: ranging from very large government contractors, manufacturing companies, general and specialty contractors, municipal governments, non-profit associations and charitable organizations to small private employers.

Practice Philosophy:  The firm’s attorneys are business owners and understand the need for fast, cost effective advice on labor and employment law matters when it is needed and where their clients are located.  This business philosophy translates into being available by phone and electronically late into the evening, on weekends and travelling to their client’s place of business when face time is requested or required. They enjoy implementing the latest technology to be mobile, paperless and accessible.

Practice:  A significant portion of Jennifer’s cases involve defending employers in administrative proceedings brought by state and federal agencies.  She has also negotiated collective bargaining agreements in the public and private sector, provides union organizing and strike strategies, coaches clients during labor negotiations, represents management in grievance proceedings and educates clients in contract interpretation.  Jennifer has experience in municipal law and governance and is often called to facilitate board/staff retreats.

Professional:  Jennifer participates in many professional activities. She is a past Chair of the Washington State Bar Association Continuing Legal Education Committee and past Chair of the Solo & Small Firm Section, currently serving as Secretary of the Section’s Executive Committee.  Jennifer holds several leadership positions in the General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division of the American Bar Association and has spoken on employment law at ABA national law conferences.  She has twice received the ABA Star of the Quarter for exemplary volunteer service.  Locally, Jennifer has served three terms as an officer of the Whatcom County Bar Association. She is a member of the Mt. Baker Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management and speaks frequently to lawyers and industry groups on employment law.

Education:  Jennifer attended Seattle University School of Law, where she was on the Dean’s List for Academic Achievement and graduated cum laude in 1995.  She is a graduate of Reed College with Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.  Before law school, Jennifer studied Industrial/Organizational Psychology in a Master’s Program at San Francisco State University.  Someday, she’ll finish this degree.

Personal:  Jennifer is a gadget geek and reads voraciously on the subjects of technology, entrepreneurship and law practice management.  The firm is paperless, the lawyers are mobile and both the Bellevue and Bellingham offices are semi-virtual.  Jennifer’s spouse maintains (accuses?) that her non-law priorities go like this: daughter, horse, spouse.  Besides riding, Jenifer enjoys cycling and being outdoors generally. She is a big fan of the Amazon original series Mozart in the Jungle.
