Baker, Jean

  • Departments:Community & Continuing Education Instructor

Jean is a bilingual instructor of French, has been speaking French since childhood, and has over 20 years' experience teaching adults to use the language more effectively. She has lived extensively in France, where she worked as a teacher at the Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, an interpreter and translator in Paris, and as a village librarian in the Cévennes mountains. As her students attest, she is passionate about teaching French and has a special affinity with adult learners of the language. All levels of her classes focus on improving oral production and listening comprehension. The advanced level also tackles French literature, film, and current events.

Jean holds a doctorate in French literatures. In addition to teaching French for WCC's Community Ed program, she enjoys working as an adjunct instructor of the Humanities at WCC.

Since her professional life finds her often in the classroom or in front of a computer screen, Jean likes to take to the outdoors whenever possible. She is an avid swimmer, a casual kayaker, and an enthusiastic day-hiker.
