Sheila Steinborn’s loose, painterly style and expressive brushwork help identify her dramatic western landscapes. The beauty of the awesome western landscapes, including the mountains, trees, waterfalls, ocean and islands, fog and sunsets are her inspiration. She wants her paintings to transcend her subject matter and help illuminate our connection to the world around us. Steinborn strives to suggest a scene and to capture an impression--not to be photographic. She has been teaching oil painting for 15 years and enjoys the experience of seeing students grow and try new techniques.

Sheila grew up in Savannah, Georgia, attended Valdosta State and then Peabody College where she received her master’s degree. She has studied with many professional artists at different art schools including the Scottsdale Artists School. Drawing and painting outdoors have been her greatest teacher. Steinborn is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society and a juried member of the Oil Painters of America. American Artist Magazine featured her watercolors in 1989 and a show at the Frye Museum in Seattle followed. Numerous juried shows, invitationals, awards, and commissions followed, including Cowgirl Up!, Paint the Parks and the Phippen Mueum Show in Prescott, AZ.

A million years ago Steinborn was a librarian and she still finds time to read, particularly about the Pacific Northwest. She travels as much as she can, especially to the San Juans, the Olympics, and the coasts. After living in four different states of the West, she has now found her home in beautiful Bellingham.
