Whatcom Community College's dance classes offer an introduction to modern and contemporary dance technique. Three levels of dance technique courses offered encourages students ranging from absolute beginners to intermediate-level dancers to feel comfortable challenging their intellectual and physical relationship to movement. At its core, the study of dance is the exploration of three fundamental principles of movement: space, time and effort. Classes draw on a number of movement techniques including Laban-Bartenieff Fundamentals, ballet, release technique, floorwork, Pilates, and yoga. Basic anatomy and movement mechanics are introduced to support an emphasis on bony alignment and range of motion. Creative movement, ownership of the body and its capabilities, the relationship of movement to music, and an appreciation of dance as an art form are encouraged both inside the classroom and out. Every body and every age is welcome to participate in the fun, power, and challenge of dance at WCC.
