Welcome, parents! We know choosing the right college is an important decision, both for the student and his or her family. Below is some information to give you a better idea of what to expect when your student begins at Whatcom Community College.
How does my student learn to be responsible about money management?
How does my student get involved in activities on campus?
Whatcom Community College has a robust student life. Students are encouraged to visit the Office of Student Life in Syre Student Center 208 to learn more about athletics, the College's student clubs, how to become a Student Ambassador, join student government and get involved in the numerous activities put on by the Programming & Diversity Board. Learn more on the Student Life and Orca Athletics pages.
If my student is struggling and feeling lonely on campus and/or is showing signs of stress what resources are available?WCC offers free personal counseling for students. Students can make an appointment with a counselor in the Entry & Advising Office in Laidlaw Center 116 or by calling 360.383.3080. Counselors and advisors can also refer students to one of the many community resources in Whatcom County.
How does my student find out how much their books are going to cost?Whatcom's Bookstore is located on the first floor of Syre Student Center. Required textbooks can be found and purchased in person or on the Bookstore's website.
I’m paying the tuition bills. Why can’t Whatcom Community College tell me anything about my student?According to a federal law titled the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), college students have the right to privacy of all their education records which includes grades, financial information, and disciplinary records. Under this same law, parents who want to gain access to a student’s records will need the permission of their student to do so. Learn more about FERPA on our Policies & Procedures page.
How can I get a copy of my student's grades?
Your son or daughter can provide you this information by logging on to MyWCC through the College website.
How can I get verification of my student’s enrollment and grade point average for my insurance company?
The National Student Clearinghouse is authorized to issue student enrollment verifications. Third party requestors (creditors, lenders, scholarship providers, housing providers, insurance companies, etc.) and students can instantly obtain student enrollment verifications online through this service, which is available 24/7 for a small fee.
How can I get a message to my student?
To allow classroom instruction to happen without interruptions, we do not attempt to contact students unless there is an emergency situation. In the case of an emergency, someone from the Admissions & Registration Office in LDC 102 will deliver a message to the classroom where your student is expected to be. Although we will make every effort to contact your student, there is no guarantee that your student will be in the classroom to receive the message or that we will be able to reach your student to deliver the message.
