Beyond Prisons: The System of Mass Incarceration and the Abolition Movement

  • Date: 11/12/2024 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
  • Location: SYRE107

The Equity Project (TEP) invites you to an opportunity to learn about the history, current issues, and possible alternatives to the system of mass incarceration in the Unites States. Yusuke Okazaki, Associate Director for Intercultural Services, will provide some historical context for the birth of the modern penitentiary system and how historical legacies still shape current issues. Justin Ericksen, English Faculty, will share some of his experiences working as a lawyer and teaching justice related courses at WCC. We will also provide data and research findings that illustrate the full scope and reach of this system, and how it disproportionately harms and impacts certain communities.
