Each summer, students participate in academic enrichment courses offered on the college campus. For six weeks, participants attend a variety of classes including math, world language, science, language arts, and electives on Whatcom’s campus. Curriculum is designed using an experiential learning model to integrate classroom instruction with student’s experiences in personal workshops, college visits, and cultural field trips.
More about the summer program
- In addition to improving academic skills, students explore college campuses, work with mentors to better understand higher education systems, learn how to identify scholarships and apply for funding for college, and participate in career exploration activities.
- Visit colleges, museums, local business and industries, art galleries, and more.
- All Upward Bound students are eligible to take a 2 credit Education Planning course.
- Seniors may apply for a WCC scholarship to take a 5 credit college level class after completing their senior year in high school.
- To celebrate students’ hard work at Summer Academy, an awards ceremony is held on the last day of the program. Families and students are invited for an evening of refreshments, the presentation of student and staff awards, and viewing of class work.
